How to find more auditions!

LOOKING FOR AUDITIONS? We post some Auditions for actors without agents on our studio bulletin board but here are some other ways to get auditions:

·           Build your web of personal contacts and networks: network with other actors and stay connected to the grapevine: contact and cultivate agents, casting directors, directors, anyone in the business!

·           Be persistent, be personal and be creative. Be organized, do the rounds, write those letters, go to the theatre directly, etc.

·           Get an agent! And learn how to cultivate your relationship with your agent…. Agents will have access to many auditions that you will never learn about if you are not represented.  Most high-paying jobs will never be publicly posted, especially in film and television.  But don’t rely on your agent to build your career!  Drop by and chat with us on how to get an agent! It's hard work but it's a critical part of your career.

·           Become a member of Theatre Ontario: They e-mail auditions to members once or twice a month! And they do a lot of other great things too. 215 Spadina Avenue, Suite 210 (half way between Queen Street and Dundas Street on the East side by Sullivan Street). Theatre Ontario: http://www.theatreontario.org

·           Canadian Actors Online: An absolutely ESSENTIAL resource! minor fee, audition service plus don't miss the Mega-FAQ section: www.canadianactor.com

·           Great for student films, videos, TV and break-entry roles anywhere in the world including Toronto: www.mandy.com

·          Aaction for actors! Great casting service:  http://www.aactionauditions.com/   why aren't you on it? And here is their link to the locations of TV/Film casting places in Toronto so you don't get lost ONCE you get that audition: http://www.aactionauditions.com/phonedir/viewforum.php?f=16

·        E-drive [E-Drive is an electronic mailing list for Equity members. Non-members are free to subscribe but the postings will be geared toward Equity members. It sends theatre auditions to your email account.] Most will appear on the above services too. Go to the Equity home page for details: http://www.caea.com/edrive/

·           NOW and EYE: occasional great audition notices are published in the classifieds sections BUT be sure to exercise "due diligence" and watch out for scams and shifty slime types.

Other useful audition resources:

  • ACTRA Apprentice's un-official official site carries up to the minute linked student auditions: http://www.tekmagic.com/actra/audit2.htm

  • Register with L.I.F.T The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto. The LIFT cast list of performers is open to non-members for a $25 fee and is a good way to contact the kind of filmmaker who will get you noticed with an interesting short film. Not a source for paying gigs though.  Toronto Details at: http://www.lift.on.ca

  • WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S SHOOTING IN T.O. region this month? GO TO THE actra SITE...  http://www.actratoronto.com/what/shooting.html

  • Find those new "digital video revolution" directors.... check out the DV CAFE:  http://www.dvshop.ca/dvcafe/toronto/tocrew.html

  • Popular site for independent film-makers, etc, free listing of your actor's resume: http://www.independentfilmcenter.com/

  • For more experience but not for cash: Go on campus… go to the various colleges and universities and check out the campus bulletin boards and newspapers for auditions to get experience and make contacts.

  • New breakdown service, like Mandy etc.: http://www.actorsaccess.com/

Work outside of Canada?

And of course you have to get better at auditioning. OK, here is a not-subtle hint: Try our audition classes... weekend immersions that work! Just click on class descriptions for current dates etc:

TV COMMERCIAL WEEKEND: This class will make a huge difference in how you audition for TV Commercial work. Any performer who is in that market should do this class! We take you through every type of test audition and give specific, highly targeted exercises to improve your commercial hit rate.

AUDITION SKILLS WEEKEND: We cover most kinds of audition EXCEPT the TV Commercial process in this intense immersion-style workshop. This is the workshop for people who want to improve cold-reading and audition techniques for film, theatre and TV roles. Actors should have some experience auditioning plus fundamental training to get the most out of this class. We put a lot of emphasis on how to prepare and then how to win!

THE VOICE-OVER OVERVIEW WEEKEND: Do you have an exciting, unusual or well-trained voice? This workshop will help you find out how to apply it to the Canadian voice industry. We go over winning approaches to radio, TV voice-over and animation work, from the audition to the studio session.  Do you have a less than exciting voice? This workshop is a highly efficient way for actors to focus on voice and develop fresh ways to make an impact.
